What is a QR code?

A QR (Quick Response) code is a square barcode that stores information in a pattern of black and white modules. A phone camera or scanner app reads the pattern and instantly opens the link, text, WiFi network or contact card encoded inside it.

How QR codes work

The data you enter — a URL, phone number, WiFi credentials and so on — is formatted into a specific text pattern, then encoded into the QR's grid using an error-correction algorithm. Scanning software decodes that grid back into the original data in a fraction of a second.

Static vs dynamic QR codes

This generator creates static QR codes: the data is embedded directly in the pattern, so it works forever and does not depend on any server. Dynamic QR codes instead point to a redirect URL that can be changed later, which is useful for tracking scans but requires an ongoing service to keep working.

QR code error correction

Error correction adds redundancy so a QR code can still be read even if it is partly damaged, dirty, or covered by a logo. Low correction keeps the pattern simpler and slightly easier to scan at small sizes; High correction tolerates more damage but produces a denser pattern — useful whenever you add a logo.

QR code size

Larger QR codes hold the same data but are easier to scan from a distance or when printed. As a rule of thumb, use at least 256px for on-screen use, 512px for flyers and packaging, and 1024px for banners or anything scanned from more than a couple of metres away.

QR code safety and privacy

A QR code is only as safe as the destination it points to — always double-check a link before sharing it widely. On this tool, the QR code is built in your own browser: your entered text, phone numbers, WiFi passwords and contact details are not uploaded to or stored on our servers.

QR codes are widely used for restaurant menus, WiFi sharing at home or in offices, business cards, event check-ins, product packaging, payment links, social media profiles and marketing campaigns that bridge print and digital.

Best practices

Keep enough quiet zone (margin) around the code, test it with more than one phone before printing in bulk, avoid very light foreground colors, and keep any logo small enough that it doesn't cover the position markers in the corners.
